RESEARCH BRAINTEASER
For the next 5 minutes, I want you to write down everything you know about writing and presenting a research report. Your write up will count toward your case study participation points, so please put time, thought and effort into your response.

Title page- this page has the name of the project, client or organization you are doing research for.
ReplyDeleteTable of Contents- this page should be no more than one page and will title all areas of the report and include page numbers for findings. This is a convenience for the person reading the report.
Executive summary- this section will shorten and summarize all key findings of the report. this will also touch on recommendations accumulated based on those key findings.
Background- this area sets the contents and overall goal of the research and the companies strengths and weakness according to the research and findings.
Methodology-here is where the researcher discusses how they went about finding the information and why they went about doing it that way. This would My measurement tools, sample, environment and rational.
Findings- this section will show the results of every question asked in numerical value. this section is long and detailed. It will account for every finding and result.
Appendixes- this section provides the supporting items, like the actual questionnaire and interviews or IDIs. This is so the client can look up specific information that is not addressed in the findings. i.e. the actual filled out surveys and IDIs.
Hi Correne -
ReplyDeleteWhat can you tell me about presenting a research report? What sort of information would the client/agency be looking for or interested in hearing?
When presenting the findings it is important to be clear and concise with the findings. It is helpful to have visuals for the client to follow along. The client will want to k now all detailed findings and an interpretation of those findings in both verbal and numerical values. Than the client would want to know recommendations based on those findings that will apply to their company or goal.
ReplyDeleteAlso what does the data mean?
ReplyDeleteWhat impact will the info have?
What has been learned?
What has been learned.
How can future studies be enhanced
Good answer. I'll be looking for the above mentioned information in your final report and presentation on Thursday!
ReplyDeleteToday we are going to review Chapter 14 in our textbook before moving on to the semester review.
Can you summarize for me the role of a research report?
The role of research report is to conclude and compile detailed information on a specific topic. the information must be detailed and easy for the reader to interpret and decect. The information must be analyzed from various standpoints to provide a clear analysis of all findings.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're not copying down answers directly from the textbook! :)
ReplyDeleteBut your answer is correct in that the role of a research report is to provide clients and the advertising agency results, analysis and recommendations for how to move forward based on what the research uncovered.
Why is the Conclusion or Analysis section of the report important?
ReplyDeleteactually I couldnt find it that was all my own words
ReplyDeleteThe analysis is important because it tells the findings which are the VALUE of the entire report. This is what the company or client can actually use.
ReplyDeleteMy apologies then. It was a very professional sounding answer! :)
ReplyDeleteYou are correct in that conclusions answer the research problem and/or objectives set at the start of the research process. Conclusions should discuss the results of the research study.
So in Part V of your research project outline you are asked to provide a “lessons learned” section. Can you tell me what this “lessons learned” section should look like?
ReplyDeleteI would say this should include all discrepancys in the research process. things that resulted in error or inconclusive results. How is could have been altered to produce more accurate results. this includes everything from wording of questions on surveys to environment of study, participants and conclusions.
ReplyDeleteExactly. In this section, I will be looking for what you learned after a semester of doing a research project. For example, should you have increased your sample size? Should you have asked a certain question on your survey? Should you have set different objectives at the start? ETC.
ReplyDeleteOn Thursday, you will present your semester long research project. Let’s turn to page 475 in the textbook to the section entitled “Making a Presentation”. Please pay particular attention to the bullet points on this page. You should be prepared to address these bullet points or incorporate them into your oral presentation.
ReplyDeleteDo you have any questions about this project before we move on?
will the lessons learned count against us?
ReplyDeleteNot at all. This is just a required section in the report. I will be looking for you to provide thoughtful and analytic "what I could have done if I had to do this all over" ideas.
ReplyDeleteAny other questions?
ReplyDeleteIf not, please pull out the handout I gave you last Thursday in class entitled “Semester Review”. Let’s turn to the section called “What is Secondary Data?”
okay great I learned alot
ReplyDeletegot it
ReplyDeleteGood, I can't wait to read your report.
ReplyDeleteDo you have that Semester Review handout ready to go?
yes ready
ReplyDeleteOkay, you will need to get answers from Frankie for what you missed.
ReplyDeleteTurning to section "What is secondary data?, what is secondary data and what are the two sources one can get secondary data from?
Secondary data is information you gather that has already been compiled by someone else. this can come from the library, articles, journals, online ect..
ReplyDeleteRight. So what are the two sources we can find secondary data from?
ReplyDeleteOnline and print such as articles and journals
ReplyDeleteYou are skipping ahead to the next question about where to find secondary data.
ReplyDeleteThe two sources for sec. data include:
- Internal: information from annual reports, product testing results, customer profiles, and reports prepared by the company for the company (i.e. internal newsletters)
- External: government reports (i.e. Census), trade and industry associations, business magazines (i.e. Time)
So the best way to think about this is: inside the organization and outside the organization.
Okay, let's skip to "What is Qualitative Research?" Can you tell me what it is?
ReplyDeleteAny ideas?
ReplyDeleteQualitative research is in-depth research that goes beyond numerical values to the thoughts, feelings, attitudes and behaviors of the consumer.
ReplyDeletecomputer is posting slow today
ReplyDeleteExactly. So looking at the chart, what are some forms of measurement (or tools) researchers use to get qualitative information from respondents?
ReplyDeleteIDIs, focus groups, open ended questions and observations of consumers in natural environments
ReplyDeleteClose. You got two of them: focus groups and IDI's. The others include: sentence completion, 3rd person techniques, cartoon drawings, projective tests, word association tests, consumer drawings, photo sorts, and storytelling. (We did an in-class exercise using some of these techniques.)
ReplyDeleteSo, what is quantitative research?
ReplyDeletequantitative deals with the numbers usually in large quantities. From this we can gather percentages and numerical values as they pertain to the majority of the consumer.
ReplyDeleteVery good. Let's do one more question. What are the six elements you need to successfully conduct a focus group?
ReplyDeleteParticipants
ReplyDeleteEnvironment

and I forgot the 6th....
Length of time. The ideal time is 60-90 minutes.
ReplyDeleteTime!
ReplyDeleteWe will try to finish the remainder of this Semester Review on Thursday. In the meantime...
ReplyDeleteHOMEWORK REMINDER
Semester long research project due Thursday, May 7th, including written report and oral presentation (Level 200). This final research report will include the requirements from all five sections, including actual copies of your surveys and/or in-depth interviews. This final report should be professionally bound upon hand in.
Part V of the research report (the only section you have not handed in yet) should include:
o Conduct and gather primary data
o Measurement instrument results, including copies
o Analysis of results, including qualitative and quantitative analysis of findings AND graphic display of results using an Excel graph (i.e. bar, line, pie)
o Was the research problem and objective satisfied? Why or why not?
o Lessons learned, i.e. should you have increased your sample size?
- CORRENE: Please hand in on Thursday Chapter 12 questions as well as the case study questions if you want to receive points for those assignments.
-FRANKIE & CORRENE: Please hand in your Graphic Rating Scales exercise should you want to receive points for that assignment.
Let's skip to Ethics now...
